Characterization of Lunar Dust for Toxicological Studies. I: Particle Size Distribution
نویسندگان
چکیده
The particle size distribution PSD of lunar dust, the 20 m portion of the regolith, was determined as an initial step in the study of the possible toxicological effects it may have on the human respiratory and pulmonary systems. Utilizing scanning electron microscopy, PSDs were determined for Apollo 11 10084 and 17 70051 dust samples, as well as lunar dust simulant JSC-1Avf. The novel methodology employed is described in detail. All measured PSDs feature a log-normal distribution having a single mode in a range 100–300 nm for lunar dust samples, but the lunar simulant has a mode at 600 nm. Micro-morphology and Toxicological Effects of Lunar Dust
Introduction: The Moon is being considered as an effective test-bed and fueling station for future space missions to Mars and beyond, with In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) of lunar materials [1]. From the Apollo missions, however, it is well known that dust on the Moon can cause serious problems for human’s exploration activities [2]. One of the paramount problems is the potential for a toxi...
متن کاملShape and Size Relationship of Several Lunar Dusts: Preliminary Results
Introduction: Before establishing a human outpost on the Moon, numerous problems associated with lunar dust must be addressed and mitigated [1, 2]. The deleterious nature of lunar dusts was experienced during all Apollo missions. Lunar dusts (brought in on dirty spacesuits and boots) contaminated the atmosphere in the lunar module and irritated the eyes, sinuses, and throats of the astronauts [...
متن کاملPhysicochemical properties of respirable-size lunar dust
We separated the respirable dust and other size fractions from Apollo 14 bulk sample 14003,96 in a dry nitrogen environment. While our toxicology team performed in vivo and in vitro experiments with the respirable fraction, we studied the size distribution and shape, chemistry, mineralogy, spectroscopy, iron content and magnetic resonance of various size fractions. These represent the finest-gr...
متن کاملCharacterization of Lunar Dust for Toxicological Studies. II: Texture and Shape Characteristics
The morphology shape and texture of dust fractions of five Apollo lunar soils and a lunar dust simulant, JSC-1Avf, was studied using scanning electron microscopy. Shape aspect ratio and complexity of particles was described based on the two-dimensional projection images. The distributions of aspect ratio and complexity of particles are reported. It was determined that the Apollo lunar dust part...

The Significance of Dust: Dust studies have already been identified as crucial components of missions to the Moon, Mars, asteroids, and Mercury over the next decade [1,2]. Detailed study of the physical and chemical nature of the fine particulate portion of regoliths of planetary bodies is a key to understanding micrometeorite bombardment and the nature of re-golith formation [e.g., 3]. The Pro...
